The holiday season is an exciting time to decorate your home. During December, department stores are brimming with new decorating ideas and holiday products that would look beautiful in your home. You're tempted to purchase new holiday decor each and every year, yet this habit can be a strain on your already-tight holiday budget. Plus, the season is so short lived, it seems like once the decorations go up, it's practically time to take them down again.

This year, decorate your home with seasonal decorations versus holiday ones. Unconventional holiday decor comes in many types and styles, all with a shelf life of at least three months instead of three weeks. This type of decor conveys a sense of holiday warmth without the holiday statement, allowing you to keep the decorations up for the duration of the winter season.

For general seasonal decorating, Vern Yip, interior designer on TLC's Trading Spaces, recommends using color to add overall impact. "Accent rooms by adding seasonal colors such as red, burgundy and emerald green with touches of silver and gold to contribute to the overall feeling of comfort during the holiday season," he says. This provides the basis for your seasonal decorating scheme. For more specific decorating ideas, we've compiled some tips to help you maintain that seasonal decor until spring.

Picture This!
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a family photo must speak volumes. Family photos are a great way to add warmth and a sense of belonging to a home. Plus, they are an ideal way to welcome family members over for the holidays.
