Corral the Chaos

6 Easy Ways to Organize Your Nursery Before Baby Arrives

"You also want to consider making things portable," Durham says. Pack pretty baskets with the paraphernalia you'll need for an on-the-spot diaper change, and leave one in each room.

4. Store Things Smartly
Newborns grow into (and out of) an entire wardrobe every three months, which makes accessible storage a must-have. When her 6-year-old daughter was small, Stander simply added another rod to her baby's closet, hanging current clothes on the right and too-big clothes on the left.

She also advises her new-parent clients to invest in a few archival-quality boxes to give keepsakes, like baby's first booties or her hospital bracelet, an instant home. Clear plastic bins are great for keeping clothes and toys contained; just slip an index card in the side of the box for an easy-to-read label.

5. Take It Easy
Pregnancy is no time to be a weekend warrior. Pulling a two-day organizing marathon a la Trading Spaces will just leave you feeling exhausted and resentful, especially if you don't even finish the job. By limiting yourself to two-hour chunks of work time, you can slowly rein in the nursery chaos without burning yourself out.

To reward yourself for your efforts and give yourself a concrete stopping point, piggyback it onto a fun activity, says Ecker. "Make plans in advance to meet your husband for lunch at the caf矤own the street at 4:30, or buy tickets for a movie," she says.
