The Baby's Nursery Part Two

Planning and Creating This Special Room

Whether it's a corner of your room, alongside your other child or a nursery of her own, you will need to decide where Baby is going to sleep and where you can store all the baby gear you will inevitably accumulate.

"We had such a small apartment when our first baby was born that we had to put the crib in our room," says Taylor. "I bought an inexpensive room divider from a flea market and made the corner her special space."

No matter how small the space, designate the area and make it special, says Perera. "Keep that one space appointed just for the baby, no grownup clutter allowed!" she says. "Additionally, try to do something just for them, hang a piece of art or a mobile, paint one wall or do something to make that area feel a little separate from the rest of the room."

Kosik found space an issue, and the extra crib didn't help. She removed the closet doors to allow full access to the closet due to the room's small size (10 x10), lack of wall space for furniture and extra crib (the furniture would block the closet door opening). "We installed a closet organizer (in white) ... to maximize its storage potential," she says.

Magsamen had a very small house when her daughter, Hannah, was born. "She slept in a bassinet right next to our bed," she says. "I loved hearing her breath and giggle in her sleep and it made nursing so easy and warm in the middle of the night. We cleared out a dresser drawer for her things and used our bed as a changing table. Everything worked out fine."

Her daughter is now 19, and she still likes to crawl in bed and snuggle. "I guess it's nice to have fancy things but they aren't what make the moments really special," says Magsamen. "The moments are special because of the people who fill our hours and days, not the things that fill our homes."
