The Baby's Nursery Part Two
Planning and Creating This Special Room
By Donna Smith
Which paint is best for Baby's room? "My favorite paints, especially for nurseries, are low or no VOC paints," says Perera. "Most paints create toxic off gases that are not only detrimental to the environment but can be harmful to people as well."
VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are compounds in some paints that produce a gas when applied, which can alter air quality. Manufacturing techniques have lead to low or no VOC paints that release minimal, or no, pollutants and are almost odor free.
And don't forget the wallpaper option. "I love wallpaper!" says Perera. "It's made such a comeback over the past few years that there are now many amazing options to suit all aesthetics!"
While technically a part of the wall, windows tend to take on a life all their own -- and can stand on their own.
Perera likes to layer windows. "My preference is a combination of drapery with some sort of shade," she says. "The curtains I use to add softness and color/pattern/texture, and then utilize a light diffusing, or blackout, shade for privacy and light control. This shade can either be a simple roller shade from the hardware store, a bamboo or fabric roll-up shade, or a more decorative custom roman shade. The combination is not only practical, but adds a very custom look to the room."
Sometimes windows can be on a wall that allows too much light into a room, which can disturb a baby's sleep. "I bought an inexpensive room divider from a flea market and made the corner her special space," says Taylor. "I put a shade on the window to keep some of the sun out, which was a blessing and helped with her afternoon naps!"
