Expert Q&A

By Donna Dawson
Master Gardener

What are the best, foolproof plants to grow for someone who has a brown thumb?

There are some wonderful annuals that are easy care, and if planted in the right place (sun vs. shade) and watered when they need it, will perform for you. Here are some that would fit the bill: alyssum, aster, cosmos, marigolds, dianthus, geranium, lavatera, pansy, petunia, poppy, snapdragon, stock, viola, zinnia, sweet pea, sun flowers, portulaca and strawflower.

If you are feeling brave and you also want to try some perennials in your garden, these are easy to grow: Lavatera, day lily, grasses, hostas, soapworts, artemisia, poppy, lamium, lady's mantle, erigeron and centaurea montana.

There are many more, but this is a good start to your brown thumb turning green on you!
